Cornelius “Neil” Peters

1931 – 2006

On Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Neil Peters aged 74 years of Morden went to his eternal rest.

Dad was born on March 30, 1931 in the Morden area to Jacob and Anna Peters.  He spent most of his childhood years in the Crystal City and Kaleida area.  He married Marlene Neustater on August 21, 1960 and together they raised 5 children.

Dad had many different jobs throughout his life.  Mom and dad operated the Green Lantern Restaurant in Winkler and after that burnt down they ran the pool hall in Gretna.  Most of dad’s working life was spent as a grain buyer for Pioneer elevator.  He was transferred to Kelstern and Foam Lake and then back to Winkler.  They later moved to Morden where dad spent his remaining working years working at JB Agri in Morden.

Dad was very passionate about sports; he loved to play and watch them all.  He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, horseshoes, curling and was a very good bowler.  He especially loved to watch the Montreal Canadiens and the Los Angeles Dodgers.  But the one sport that we believe that he loved the most was baseball.  In later years, dad would be a part of the MSOS softball teams and even pitched until a few years ago.

Dad also loved the mountains and seeing wildlife.  Mom and dad took many trips to the West.  He loved to camp and some of their favourite places to visit were Colorado, Takakka Falls and Watrous.  Dad also loved to play cards and games like crib, pool and shuffleboard with his friends at the Morden Friendship Centre.  He volunteered many hours at there.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 45 years Marlene of Morden; 1 daughter Heidi (Lorne) Wiebe of Morden; 4 sons Don (Sally), Rick, Russ (Lynda) all of Morden and Tom (Dawn) of Innisfail, AB; and 8 grandchildren.  Neil is also survived by 1 sister, 5 brothers and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Sommer, his parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 pm at the Morden Church of God with Rev. George Derksen officiating.  Interment followed at Chapel Cemetery.

If friends and family so desire, donations may be made to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Cancer Care Box 2000 Winkler, MB R6W 1H8 or to the Morden Friendship Centre 306 North Railway St. Morden, MB R6M 1S7.
