William W. Penner

1919 – 2006

WillaimWPenner.jpgPeacefully, on Friday, October 6, 2006 at his residence in Winkler, William W. Penner aged 86 years, went to be with his Lord.

William Penner was born to Heinrich and Margaretha Penner on November 15, 1919.  He was raised on a farm north of Plum Coulee and had 1 sister and 2 brothers both who were older.  He farmed here with his family until he got married.

He and his brother Peter were baptized at the same time in the Plum Coulee Bergthaler Mennonite Church in 1941.

On August 30, 1942, William married Tena Wiebe.  They had 5 children.  William and Tena farmed east of Sperling until 1954.  At this time, they relocated to the farm south of Sperling.  Here was a larger house to accommodate the growing family as well as a large barn for the expanding livestock inventory.  The livestock included hogs, cattle, chickens and horses.  William enjoyed riding horses but was sometimes bucked off and saw stars.  In the later years before retiring, they only farmed grain and feeder hogs.

Besides farming, he enjoyed providing for his family’s needs such as shopping for groceries and clothing in Winnipeg after delivering a load of hogs.  William also enjoyed his winter trips to points of interest in the USA, South America, Russia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand to name a few.

As grandchildren came into the family, he took pleasure in giving out treats and making time for them.

In the last few years as William’s health deteriorated, he yearned to go home to Heaven.

He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 64 years, 1 month and 6 days, Tena (nee Wiebe) of Winkler; 2 daughters, Elaine Stratford of Kelowna, BC, Ruth and Gerry Bergen of Winkler; 3 sons, Albert and Judy of Carman, Edward and Erna of Winkler and Wes of Sperling as well as 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by 1 grandson in infancy, 1 sister and 2 brothers.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church with Rev. Peter Penner officiating.  Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.
