Mantey, Hugo.jpgOn Friday, August 12, 2005 at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Hugo Mantey, aged 93 years of Winkler, MB, formerly of Plum Coulee, went to his eternal rest.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Lorraine (nee Gruener) of Winkler; 2 daughters Enid and Jim Ali of Winnipeg and their children, Tara and Jerry Ludd, great grandchildren, Davis and Alyssa Ludd, Derek Ali and David Ali, daughter, Marilyn and Darren Bridges of Calgary and their children, Mark, Diandra, Jenna and Courtney Bridges.

He was predeceased by his 3 sisters, Emma Jackman, Lil Stewart, Helen Kehler and 5 brothers, Fred, Russell, Ed, John and Bob Mantey.

Hugo was born on January 12, 1912 in Plum Coulee and his heart never left there.  He enjoyed a career with the CPR as a railway maintenance worker for 40 years, retiring in 1976.  He served in the infantry overseas during World War ll.  Hugo was an avid sports enthusiast, playing many sports and particularly enjoying baseball, being a staunch New York Yankees fan for his entire life.  He was proud to be inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame as the Coach of the Plum Coulee Pirates from 1955-1960.

Another love of his life was bowling.  Hugo was a dedicated church member being baptized and joining the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on May 22, 1949.  His last outing was to attend church service on January 9, 2005.  He married Lorraine (nee Gruener) on July 23, 1960 and they enjoyed 45 years of happiness.  They were fortunate to be able to travel extensively throughout their years together.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Alex Klages officiating.  Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.
