Jacob J. Klassen

1928 – 2005

Klassen Jacob J copy.jpgDad was born on April 6, 1928 to Jacob H. and Margaret Klassen in the Village of Chortitz, where he grew up and attended public school.  He also attended Sunday School that was held in private homes by a Mr. Loeppky.

Upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ, he was baptized on May 28, 1953 by Bishop Peter Friesen at Winkler Sommerfeld Church where he remained a faithful member.

In the summer of 1957, he met a special friend in Margaret Penner.  They were married on May 8, 1960 by Bishop John A. Friesen.

Church was a very important part of his life.  Unless you were sick, going to Sunday morning worship service was a must.  Dad was a Sunday School teacher first, then Superintendent altogether for over 25 years.

Dad was a quiet man, a lover of nature.  He would bring in the first flower either wild or from the garden.  On the farm, he loved to walk the fields and pick the best stems of wheat, oats, flax or whatever he had sown.

In the summer of 1993, Dad had some serious surgeries.  In the fall of 1993, mom and dad retired and moved to town, having lived on the same farm for 33 years.  Dad still did some private jobs after retirement.

In 2003, he was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia, which deteriorated his body quite rapidly.  He entered Boundary Trails Health Centre on June 14, 2005.  We saw day by day how his body was being taken over by his dementia.

Dad passed away July 22, 2005 at 10:22 pm at Boundary Trails Health Centre.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 45 years, 2 months and 14 days, Margaret (nee Penner) of Winkler; daughter, Martha and George Unger of Altona, daughter Esther and Jake Heppner of Altona, son Ed and Judy; grandchildren Kristina and Nick Neufeld, Tyler, Jessica and Riley Unger, Paul and Jeremy Heppner, Chantelle, Joshua and Kiera as well as 3 sisters and 7 brothers.

He was predeceased by daughter, Helen in 1965, son, Menno in 1970, grandson Edward in 1992, his mother in 1976 his father in 1981 and his sister Mary Banman in 1986.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with Rev. Jake Heide officiating.  Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.
