William I. R. Johnson

1928 – 2005

Johnson, Bill.jpgIt is with sadness that we announce that after a brief battle with cancer, Bill Johnson passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2005 at his home in Victoria, B.C.

Bill was born in Winnipeg on February 17, 1928 and raised in the 1-6 area of southern Manitoba.  He earned his Master of Science degree from the U of M.

He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Heather and Ross White; 2 sons, Boyd and Susan Johnson, Dean Johnson; 2 grandchildren, Keri and Beau; sister Fran and Tryggvi Einarson and sister-in-law, Margaret Johnson.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Sigrid Johnson, his first wife, Evelyn (nee Crookshank) Johnson (1995) and brother Lawrence Johnson.

He will also be sadly missed by Joey, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends in Nanaimo at Woodgrove Estates and the Paradise Isle Senior’s Society.  There are also many friends he leaves in the agricultural community where he worked for many years in North Dakota, Manitoba, Nicaragua, Ottawa, Zambia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and in B.C. where he finally retired.

Bill will be remembered for his quick wit, his kindness and his unending interest in the world around him.  He was particularly pleased to be able to vote in the recent provincial election.  Bill loved to golf at courses all over the world, but especially at Winchelsea View on Vancouver Island and Minnewasta, just outside of Morden, MB his hometown.

Memorial service took place in Victoria, B.C. at an earlier date, as well as at Wiebe Funeral Chapel in Morden, MB on Sunday, May 29, 2005 with Rev. Morris Vincent officiating.  Ash interment took place at the 1-6 Icelandic Cemetery, near Morden, MB.

A special thank you to Dr. Eric Grantner in Nanaimo and Drs. Bryan Murray, Wayne Ghesquiere, Adrian Yee in Victoria and the many Juan de Fuca home support workers and Esquimalt nurses, whose kind care was greatly appreciated.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Paradise Isle Senior Society #10 13 Victoria Cr., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 5B9.
