Arni Gillis

1918 – 2005

Gillis, Arni.jpgPeacefully with his family by his side, Arni Gillis passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, RM of Stanley, MB at the age of 86 years. 

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Helga, daughter, Joyce (Jim) Barron, sons Jim (Janice), Lawrence (Dena) and Allen (Kerri), grandchildren Michael, Amy (Chris) Henderson, Marni, Lonnie, Jeremy, Jordan, Paige, Wyatt and great-granddaughter, Haylee, sisters Olive Gillis and Sigga (Charles) Hildebrand, brothers Frank and John Gillis and numerous nieces, Nephews, cousins and friends. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Ragnar and Salome Gillis, brothers and Oscar Gillis, sister-in-law June Gillis, brother-in-law Arni Gillis and grandson, Matthew Gillis.

Arni was born September 14, 1918 on the family farm in the 1-6 District south of Morden, MB.  The eldest son of Ragnar and Salome Gillis, he grew up helping on the farm, receiving his education at Elk Creek and Lindal Schools.  On November 22, 1947, he married Helga Isaacson and together they shared almost 58 years raising their family and working on the farm until retiring to Morden in 1987.

Arni was a quiet, kind and gentle man.  He loved his family and treasured each of his relatives, neighbors and friends very much.  He was well loved and highly respected by all who knew him.

He was a great baseball fan and enjoyed many years playing shortstop on the 106 team.  He was an active community member involved with the United Way, the Icelandic Cemetery, the Elk Creek School Board and many other events throughout the years.

Funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Church, Morden on Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Doug Craig officiating.  Interment followed at the 1-6 Icelandic Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the 1-6 Icelandic cemetery C/O John Olafson, 10 Glenview Dr. Morden, MB R6M 2A8 or the Boundary Trails Health Centre Palliative Care Unit Box 2000, Winkler, Mb R6W 1H8.

The family of Arni Gillis extends deepest thanks and appreciation to our relatives, neighbors and friends for the many acts of kindness shown during our recent loss.  We appreciate greatly the many phone calls, visits, food, flowers, cards and donations.  Sincere thank you to the staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre, especially the Medical and Palliative Care Ward for their care and compassion.  Very special thanks to the homecare attendants Agatha and Pat for the personal assistance and wonderful care.  Thanks also to Doug Craig for his comforting support and encouragement and to Rick Wiebe and staff at Wiebe Funeral Chapel for your professional service.  Your thoughtfulness and support at this difficult time is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
