John J. Gerbrandt

1925 – 2005

gerbrandt, John.jpgOn July 7, 2005 John J. Gerbrandt went home to be with the Lord.  He died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family at Boundary Trails Health Centre in Winkler, MB.

Dad was born on December 14, 1925 to Jacob and Helena Gerbrandt at the family homestead at Kronsweide, Manitoba.  Dad was the seventh of nine children.  The family was very close and when dad’s mother Helena died when he was three and a half years old, this was a very difficult time for the family.  The family continued to be very close and the bond dad had with his brothers and sisters continued throughout his life.

Dad’s father remarried a few years later to Suzanne Giesbrecht and brought ten more children into the family.  A new Gerbrandt-Giesbrecht family was formed.

At the age of 18, dad accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour and at the age of 20, he was baptized by Bishop William H. Falk in the Rose Farm EMM Church.

Also at the age of 18, dad left home to serve his country in alternate service as a conscientious objector during World War II.  He served his country in this capacity for 30 months working at various farms.  He found it difficult and lonely to be away from his family.

When dad was 23, the Lord led him to the love of his life – Agatha Dyck.  John and Agatha were married on September 16, 1951 at Rose Farm EMM Church.  This marriage was blessed with four children, Eldon, Lorena, Glenda and Eleanor.  John and Agatha farmed in the Rose Farm area.  Dad loved to farm and had a successful small mixed farm.  They had many friends in the community, and dad was active in church committees and served as a trustee for the Rose Farm School for many years.  He also served on the Board of the Lowe Farm Credit Union for numerous years.  Later, when the Rose Farm EMM Church closed, dad and mom attended the Lowe Farm Emmanuel Church.  As time permitted, dad loved going to the coffee shop to visit with his friends, a practice he continued when he moved to Winkler.

At age 63, dad and mom moved to Winkler.  They continued to farm for the next five years and thereafter rented their land out to other farmers in the Rose farm area.  Dad had the gift of friendship in his own quiet way, and they made many new friends in the Winkler area.

Three years ago, dad and mom moved to a condominium at the Cedar Estates in Winkler.  Dad had various health problems in the last few years, and sometimes the journey was quite difficult.  The family felt that every day he had was a special blessing.  His relationship with God was very important to him throughout his life and he was a spiritual leader in our home.  His prayers and concerns for his family were greatly appreciated and felt.

John is survived by his loving wife, Agatha of 53 years and ten months; his son Eldon and wife Bonnie Gerbrandt of Morden, MB and their children Shawna and husband Jeremy Lumgair, Ryan and wife Charity Gerbrandt, Tara and husband Andrew Braun and Cameron Gerbrandt; his daughter Lorena and husband Wayne Favel of Wetaskiwin, AB and their children Mathieu and wife Grace Rouleau and David Rouleau; his daughter Glenda Gerbrandt of Winnipeg, MB; his daughter Eleanor and husband Tony Rose of Morris, MB and their children Candice and husband James Sawatzky, Dustin Rose and Ashley Rose.  He is also survived by eight precious great grandchildren, as well as two brothers, Henry and Diedrich.  He was predeceased by brothers, Jake, Pete, Ed and sisters Mary, Sara, Helen and Susan in infancy.

Although dad’s unexpected and sudden passing will leave a great emptiness in all of our lives who love him so much, we take great comfort in knowing that he is now with Jesus and other loved ones.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course; I have kept the faith.  Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not to me only but unto all them that love his appearing.”  II Timothy 4:7 & 8.

Funeral service was held on Monday, July 11, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Winkler EMM Church with Pastor Jerry Hildebrand officiating.  Interment followed at the Kronsweide Cemetery.
