Mary Funk

Mary Funk (nee Kroeker)

1917 - 2005

Funk, Mary2.jpgIt is with sadness that we the family announce the passing of Mary Funk, beloved wife of David H. Funk of Winkler, MB.

Mom was born to Peter and Margaret Kroeker (nee Wolf) on December 12, 1917 on a homestead southwest of Morden, MB.

Mom accepted Christ as her Saviour early in life and was baptized in the Morden Bergthaler Church in Morden on May 23, 1937.

At the age of 18, she left home spending the next thirteen years working at a job as a maid and farmhand.  She had a small reprieve one summer when she took the opportunity to pick fruit in British Columbia.  She also had a desire to be a mechanic, and regretted turning down an offer for training during the 1940’s.

After a brief courtship, she married David H. Funk on September 22, 1949 at the age of 31.  She settled in with Dad and his three children on a farm one mile north of Winkler.  She instantly became a wife and mother and did an exceptional job at both.  Mom also bore three more of Dad’s children and they adopted their last child.

In 1965, Mom took on a part time job at the Triangle Oasis, working as a maid at the motel and a cook at the restaurant.  She also worked briefly as a cook at the Harvest Inn Restaurant.  Mom and Dad left the farm for two years (1967 – 1969) to help with the operations on an egg and poultry farm east of Winkler.  They retired to their own farm, where they continued to live until 1974.  During that summer, they sold the farm and moved to their present home on 8th Street, South in Winkler.  Mom and Dad both found employment at the Valley Bowling Lanes, doing custodial work, with Mom also doing some cooking and serving in the restaurant.  They worked there for ten years until their retirement in 1985.

After a brief struggle in her final moments of her life, she passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28th, 2005, at 7:25 a.m. at Boundary Trails Health Centre surrounded by her caring family.

Funeral service took place on December 31, 2005, at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church with Rev. Peter Penner and Rev. victor Funk officiating.  Interment followed at Rosenbach Cemetery.  She is now cradled in the loving arms of her Saviour, free of all physical afflictions and worry.  An eternity of joy has begun!

Mom will be lovingly remembered by her husband, David; her children, Walter (Sharon), Betty Spurrill (Dan), Victor (Norma), Bill (Phyllis), Marianne Penner (Philip), John (Pamela), Gloria Dyck (David); 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mom’s caring and unselfish character has influenced all of her children and grandchildren.  Mom, you will be greatly missed but we will see you in Heaven.

If friends and family so desire, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee 134 Plaza Dr. Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
