Abram (Abe) Friesen

1929 - 2004

Abe Friesen.jpgOur brother, Abram Friesen, of Brandon passed away suddenly, Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at Brandon Regional Hospital.  He was predeceased by his father Abram Friesen in 1976 and his mother Helena (nee Stoesz) in 1992.  He was survived by 1 sister, Eleanor Stevenson of Brandon, and 2 brothers, Neil & Prince Rupert, BC and Jim of Plum Coulee, MB.

Born July 5, 1929 south of Horndean, MB (formerly known as Schoenau S.D.), he attended school completing grade 10 in Rosenfeld with little effort, as his good memory was well known.  It was only a few years ago that he took on the challenge of completing grade 12.  He passed nearly every exam with little studying.

Although a generally quiet person, he could strike up quite a conversation easily when the topic was of interest to him.  He was also a proficient mandolin and guitar player who played at the Rosenfeld Bergthaler Church evening services.  His co-workers and employers at Friesen Plbg & Htg, McDonalds Sheet Metal (Hamilton, ON) and Rodgers Sheet Metal in Wpg, MB, always appreciated him for his good work.  He was later employed by his brother, Jim, in plumbing & heating.  Upon the passing of Dad, he easily took on the responsibility of looking after Mom, and to taxi around Aunts Barbara Siemens and Tina Hamm along with Mom for coffee & other outings.

In 1949 when the family moved to Plum Coulee, Abe attended the Church of God Youth Group and Jim remembers very well the day Abe came home and announced he’d become a Christian.  Neil asked him, “What are you going to do now?” Abe remarked very earnestly he was thinking of becoming a missionary.  Abe was baptized in the Bethel Mennonite Church in Winnipeg.

Abe has fallen asleep “as the Bible says”, but one day we will all wake up together, so to speak, and there will never, ever by anymore parting.  We as a family look forward to that day.

Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 28, at 2:00 pm at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Winkler with Rev. Dave Adrian officiating and interment followed at The Plum Coulee Cemetery.

Sincere thanks go to the Dr.’s & staff of the Brandon Reg. Hospital, Dr. Schellenberg & staff at the Eden Mental Health Centre and Dr. Reimer for their excellent care.
