Mary Martens

1918 - 2003 

On Tuesday April 29, 2003 at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Mary Martens (nee Schellenberg), age 84 years, went to her eternal rest. Mary was born November 17, 1918 in the Mason School District, daughter to Julius and Helen Schellenberg. On September 29, 1940, she married Peter Martens, also from the Mason District, in the Glencross Church. They had 4 children born to them, Matilda, Julius, Henry, and Ruth. They lived on a small farm in the Mason District until 1960 when they moved to Winnipeg. Peter drove truck while Mary provided homecare in her house, usually having 1 or 2 occupants. In 1985 Peter and Mary moved to Mossbank, SK. retiring in the small town close to where Henry and Joanne farmed, and close to Fox Valley where Julius and Marge live. After the passing of her husband Peter in 1995, Mary continued living in Mossbank until December 4, 1999, after which she moved to Winkler. In 2001, she had a stroke, paralyzing her left side, confining her to a wheelchair. Her hobbies were knitting, telling jokes, and a love of horses. After being confined to a wheelchair, she was moved from the hospital to Salem Home, Winkler until her final day April 29, 2003. She was predeceased by husband Peter H. Martens in 1995, daughter Matilda Jane Vucko in 1972, and grandson Michael James Martens in 1993. She leaves to mourn her passing, 1 daughter Ruth and husband John Pauls of Winnipeg; 2 sons Julius and wife Marge Martens of Fox Valley, SK; Henry and wife Joanne Martens of Mossbank, SK; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; 4 sisters; many nieces and nephews; and their families. Funeral service was held Saturday May 3, 2003, 2:30pm at the Glencross Mennonite Church, Pastor Ben Wiebe officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Mossbank Cemetery, Saskatchewan.
