Margaret Louise Smith (nee Hawken)

1924- 2008


On Friday, April 25, 2008 at Boyne Lodge in Carman, MB Margaret Smith, aged 84 years formerly of Miami, MB went to her eternal rest.

She worked years ago at Green's Grocery in Miami, prior to starting Gemini Fashions sewing factory in 1966, where she worked until the Miami facility closed. After that she worked in the hotel restaurant and the Chalet restaurant. She also supported the community with many hours of volunteer work, including 35 years with the Miami Bingo Committee, lunch counter at the Fun and Fiddle Festival for a number of years, amongst the other local events.

Margaret enjoyed playing bingo, curling, golf and supporting community sports activities. Margaret and Paul took in numerous Sunday afternoon baseball tournaments. When she was able, she looked forward to the 'girls' trip to the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN.

With her health deteriorating Margaret moved from her home to the Collingwood Senior Home in Miami, enjoying afternoon tea, music, movie days, etc. From here she went to Foyer Notre Dame and took part in numerous activities, including card bingo and baking. Margaret moved to the Boyne Lodge in Carman in February where her Lord called her home.

She leaves to mourn her passing 2 sons, Doug and Kim Smith of Winnipeg; Terry Smith of Miami and 1 sister, Viola as well as nieces, Barb and Jim Urquhart, Trish and Phil Haugen, Marianne and Harold Grainger and nephews, Larry and Jean Taylor, Roy and Denise Taylor and their families.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul Smith in 1997; 2 sisters, 2 brothers and her nephew, Bill Taylor.

Memorial service was held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Miami United Church with Alison Halstead officiating. Ash interment took place at Miami Cemetery.
