Alfred John Toews

1928 – 2008

It is with sadness we announce that Alfred Toews aged 79 years passed away suddenly at his home in Morden, on Thursday, March 6, 2008 with his wife, Anne, daughter, Brenda and son-in-law, Irvin at his side.

Alfred was born at his parents’ home on a farm near Altona, MB.  He received his education at New Hope School west of Altona.  Alfred accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour in 1957.  In 1958 – 1959 he completed 2 semesters at the Steinbach Bible College.

Alfred and Anne were married on June 11, 1960.  They lived in the town of Horndean, MB their first 2 years of marriage.  They then moved to their new occupation of farming at Edwin, MB and farmed from March 1962 until they sold their farm in 1990.  They then retired to Morden in 1991.

Alfred enjoyed being with his family and friends who were always welcome for coffee.  While in Morden Alfred made many new friends and was well known at all the local coffee shops.  Alfred was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in the spring of 2007 and underwent 6 months of chemo until his cancer went into remission.  This was a very difficult time.  His health improved over the winter and he was looking forward to a summer where he would be able to travel and visit many family and friends again.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Anne (nee Thiessen) Toews, 2 daughters, Brenda and Irvin Wolfe of Morden, Cheryl and Kelly Ronald of Portage la Prairie; 2 sons, Ken and Colleen Toews of Portage la Prairie, Kelvin Toews and daughter-in-law, Shirley Wong of Winnipeg; 6 grandchildren as well as a close friend of the family, Rose Sawatzky and her 4 children.

Private family interment was held at Wiebe Funeral Chapel with burial at Chapel Cemetery on Wednesday morning March 12, 2008, followed by a memorial service at Morden Alliance Church at 2:00 pm.

The School of life has taught me much

Of Living, planning, dreams and such;

I’ve leaned to work and learned to play,

But this is my Promotion day.

There is a mansion I’ve been told

Of silver, precious stones and gold-

It’s finished now and so I’ll say

Good bye to you – It’s Moving Day.

I’ve waited long to see His face

Since He redeemed me by His grace;

I’ve served Him without thought of pay.

But this is now my Crowning Day.

Ever since my Second birth

I’ve been a pilgrim on this earth;

Was held by chains to earthly clay,

Now this is my Liberation Day.
