Nettie Redekop (nee Klassen)

1917 – 2006

On Monday, June 12, 2006 at Tabor Home, Nettie Redekop (nee Klassen) aged 88 years of Morden, formerly of Winnipegosis, went to her eternal rest.

Nettie was born in Gregorjewka, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada with her family, the Klassens, at the age of 8.  Between 1937 and 1973, Nettie lived in Winnipegosis, MB with her husband, John.  Together they raised 5 children on their farm; Adena, John, Linda, Don and Norman.  In 1973, they moved to Morden.

Nettie was an excellent seamstress and kept her family well-clothed as well as sewing for others.  Her garden was a source of pride and joy and she looked forward every spring to going out and working in the soil.  She enjoyed nature in general and keenly felt the beauty of the mountains.  She valued education and ensured that each of her children completed high school.  She also felt strongly about the importance of Christianity.  A favorite hymn was “Unter Deinem Sanften Fittich (Wehrlos und Verlassen)”  She felt huge regret when her sisters moved to British Columbia and  lost their close moral support.

One of Nettie’s main characteristics was kindness.  She was a gentle person and always tried to live in peace and harmony.

She leaves to mourn her passing 1 daughter Linda Redekop and husband Wilfred Gilchrist of Ottawa, ON; 1 son Don Redekop and friend Marie of Toronto, ON; 1 daughter-in-law Darlene Redekop of Calgary, AB; 1 son-in-law Ben and Helen Bergen of Winnipeg; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 sisters Annie, Lena, Tina and Justine and 1 brother Henry Klassen.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Redekop (1993); 1 daughter Adena Bergen (1995); 2 sons Norman (1983) and John (1998).

Funeral service was held on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 1:30 pm at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden with Rev. Morris Vincent officiating.  Interment followed at Southside Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Nettie’s memory to Tabor Home Memorial Fund 230 9th St. South Morden, MB R6M 1Y3.
