Margaret Penner

1927 – 2006

On Monday, November 27, 2006 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Margaret Penner of Winkler, MB aged 79 years passed away peacefully.

Margaret was born to her parents, John B. and Aganetha (nee Heppner) on

April 25, 1927.  She grew up on a farm south of Plum Coulee and attended school in the Rudnerweide school district.  Margaret was baptized upon confession of her faith on April 8, 1948 in the Rudnerweide Sommerfeld Mennonite Church.

This same year at the age of 21, Margaret immigrated with her family to Paraguay.  It was here in the early years of pioneering, that her brother David passed away as a result of an accident on November 19, 1949.

Having taken a sewing course in Canada, Margaret developed her talent and with experience became and excellent seamstress with many clients who appreciated her work.

In February 1973, Margaret and her sister, Sara moved back to Canada to take up employment at the then new Salem Home in Winkler.  Margaret worked in the housekeeping department for 19 ˝ years and developed many lasting friendships.  Margaret and Sara also participated in a number of bus tours –including the east and west coasts and Europe.

In her retirement, Margaret served in many capacities as an expression of her faith.  She served with the church ladies at many functions and at the MCC store.  She also knitted many scarves, toques and mittens for Faith Missions.  Some of our memories include her generous hospitality, her gardening and the flowers she grew.  We as a family always looked forward to the annual family barbeques that Sara and Margaret prepared for us.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sister, Sara Penner of Winkler; 1 brother, John and Barbara Penner of Winkler; 4 nieces and 3 nephews and their families and many friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, John B. Penner (1962) and Aganetha (nee Hoeppner) (1969) and her brother David (1949).

Funeral service was held on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with Rev. Abe Wiebe and Rev. Art Wiebe officiating.  Interment followed at Rosenbach Cemetery.
