John Unger

1954 – 2006

It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of John Unger aged 52 years, of Winkler, MB on May 28, 2006 at Boundary Trails Health Centre.

He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Katherine Unger; his daughter Tina Harder; sister, Kathy Unger and brothers, Jake, Henry, Dave, John and Donna Reimer; nieces and nephews, Brenda and Richard Clouston, Gary Reimer, Christina and Eldon Reimer, Jonathan Friesen, Kristin Unger and their families.

He was predeceased by his father John Unger (1994) and brother Abram (1979).

John was born January 26, 1954 to John and Katherine Unger.  He spent his youth in Altona then moved to Winkler in 1977.  In 1983, he moved to B.C. and later returned to Winkler where he spent the remainder of his life.  John loved being with his family, spending most of his days at his mom’s.  He liked to keep busy and enjoyed fishing and mechanical work.  He was employed at Monarch Industries for 15 years and was described as a friendly and willing worker.

John was no stranger to hardship.  His handicap was a constant battle in life but he touched people’s lives with joy, smiles and enthusiasm.  John was baptized in the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church.  In November 2005, he transferred his membership to Hillside Community Church where he began a friendship with Pastor Jake and Mary Anne Friesen on a personal level.

In September 2005, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.  From October until his passing, Boundary Trails Health Centre became his home.  As his cancer got worse, he refused to let it get him down.  John continued to be an uplifting spirit to all around him.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church with Rev. Jake Friesen officiating.  Interment followed at Altona Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Boundary Trails, Jake and Mary Anne Friesen and the support of friends and family during this difficult time.
