Jacob “Jake” W. Giesbrecht

1922 – 2006

On Monday, February 13, 2006 at Salem Home, Jake W. Giesbrecht, aged 83 years of Winkler, MB formerly of Plum Coulee, went to his eternal rest.

Jake was born north of Plum Coulee on April 13, 1922, the second son of Maria (nee Stoesz) and William Giesbrecht.  He attended country schools at New Kronsthal.  He stayed single and spent most of his life farming close to his parents’ place.  He was baptized in 1942 upon confession of his faith at Kronsweide Sommerfelder Church, later transferred to Winkler Reinland Church.

Roll kuchen and watermelon were served at the farm as an annual treat to family and friends.  Everybody looked forward to this occasion every spring.  He moved to Winkler in 1960 to live and help his parents but stayed at the farm during summer months.  He retired from farming in 1983 and looked after mom.  He faithfully visited her every day after she moved to Salem.   In 1999, Jake was hospitalized for 1 month and moved into Salem in May where he stayed till his death.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Mary and Diedrich Dueck, Anne and Ed Friesen; 2 brothers, Bill and Gerty, John and Agatha and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents William and Maria Giesbrecht.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Reinland Mennonite Church with Rev. Jacob Elias officiating.  Interment followed at Grossweide Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to Salem Home Foundation Inc. 165 15th St. Winkler, MB R6W 1T8.
