George William Andrew

1914 – 2006

Peacefully on September 25, 2006 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, George William Andrew, aged 91 years of Morden, formerly of Thornhill, MB passed away.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Lydia (nee Bollenbach) of Morden; 3 daughters, Carol and Phillip Burton of Regina, SK, Elaine Andrew and Keith Wasylik of Unionville, ON, Daphne Andrew-Peers and Rick Peers of Thornhill, MB; 2 sons, Samuel and Merle of Winnipeg, Brian and Lesley of Thornhill, MB; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

George was born October 12, 1914 in the Shadeland district south of Darlingford; the youngest son of Samuel and Alice (nee Ching) Andrew.  He lived on the family farm until 1929 when he completed his formal education.

Dad purchased a farm near Thornhill in 1936.  He married Lydia in 1943 and they lived on the farm until 1994 when they moved to Morden.  Dad was a progressive farmer and always very active in the community; serving various boards including school trustee for over 30 years.  He was a committed life-long member of the United Church of Canada and fulfilled many positions in the local churches over the years.

Along with his many community activities, George filled his leisure time with reading, exploring family history, traveling, curling and playing all types of games.  His most recent favorite was Dominoes with family and friends.

George was a caring and generous man.  He was thoughtful, kind, slow to anger and was consequently sought out by family and friends alike when they were in need of wise council or a helping hand.  He was the sort of man that little ones looked up to, weaker ones leaned on and everyone wanted to emulate.  He lived a full and complete life.

Dad, you were and are greatly loved.  We will miss you.  Lydia, Sam, Carol, Elaine, Brian, Daphne and families.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, September 28 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s United Church with Jeannette Brigit officiating.  Interment followed at Darlingford Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in George’s memory to either Boundary Trails Foundation Box 2000 Winkler, MB R6W 1H8 or to the Pembina Parish United Church 353 Thornhill St. Morden, MB R6M 1M8.
