Corny Richard Friesen

1946 – 2006

On Monday, April 10, 2006 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Corny Friesen, aged 59 years of Friedensruh, MB went to his eternal rest.

Corny was born on November 3, 1946 and grew up in the village of Friedensruh.  Corny was the youngest of seven siblings.  He was baptized in June 1967 to the Winkler Sommerfeld Church, transferred his membership to the Winkler Mennonite Church in June 1988 of which he was a faithful and regular attender.

On July 23, 1967 Corny married the love of his life, Janice Loeppky.  Together they had two wonderful sons Trevor and Greg.  Corny worked for the RM of Stanley for 39 years as a grader operator.  He took pride in his job and it was very important to him that the roads were always in good condition; he would go the extra mile to make sure that happened.

June 2004 Corny was told he had colon cancer and underwent surgery on June 30.  We all prayed that surgery and 6 months of chemotherapy would cure him.  A CT scan was done after he completed the 6 months of chemo and showed no cancer.  Oh how we rejoiced!  About a month later, Corny started feeling not well again, further testing showed cancer was back and had spread to his lungs.  Corny was shocked by the news and yet never gave up hope.  So back to chemo he went but this time he was told there would be no cure and that chemo may put it into remission.  He went to Winnipeg every 2 weeks for treatment.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2006, Corny suffered a heart attack, was hospitalized and never returned to his home in Friedensruh.  He said good-bye to his loving wife, sons and their families.  He took his last breath on April 10, 2006 and went to his eternal home; no more suffering; no more pain.

Corny never complained about being sick from chemo or about the pain he suffered through.  When anyone would ask him “How are you feeling?” he would always say “Not too bad”.  He fought hard and tried anything he could to stay but the Lord said “Come unto Me.”  The victory has been won; prayers answered.  Corny has been healed.  The Lord, along with Corny has won the race.

Left to mourn are his wife Janice, son Trevor and his wife Delores, son, Greg and his fiancée Rochelle Hamm; three precious granddaughters Brooke, Holly and Calista; sister Anne and her husband George Froese, brother John and his wife Lorraine Friesen, brother Bill and his wife Mary Friesen all of Winkler.

He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Katherina Friesen and his in-laws Anton and Tina Loeppky; three brothers Abe, Peter and Jake and one brother-in-law Stan Loeppky.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Winkler Mennonite Church with Rev. Bernie Thiessen officiating.  Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.

Special thanks to Dr. Woelk, Cheryl Penner and the rest of the Chemo Dept. staff, Dr. S. Van Niekerk and the nursing staff at the Boundary Trails Health Centre.  Thank you to family and friends for all the love and support.
