Sarah Martens

1919 - 2002

Sarah was born to her parents Henry and Elizabeth Martens (nee Doerksen) at Eichenfeld, southwest of Winkler, near the Pembina Hills on June 12th, in the year 1919.

Upon the confession of faith that Jesus Christ was her personal Saviour and Redeemer for her undying God, she was baptized by Bishop Peter Toews and received as a member of the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church on June 5, 1941.

Sarah lived with her mother in Winkler.  She did some domestic work outside the home for some years, as well as doing house and yard work at home.  When her mother's health was failing due to strokes, Aunt Sarah took care of her till her passing on March 4, 1968.  This was extremely difficult on Aunt Sarah and found it very hard to adjust and became quite depressed.

In 1975, she moved to the Gretna Units, and after a year moved to Maple Drive Manor (Units) in Plum Coulee.  Aunt Sarah enjoyed it there, and had a good friendship with the other residents, playing games with them etc.  For a number of years, she daily walked to the post office, delivering and picking up the mail for the residents and then distributing it when she got back.

In October, 1997, Sarah had triple by-pass heart surgery and had a very good recovery.  She was moved to the Red River Valley Lodge Personal Care Home in Morris in October, 2000.  On Monday, November 11, Sarah had several mini strokes.  It paralyzed her left side and her speech was quite impaired.  The Lord called her home on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at 3:10 p.m.  She reached the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 25 days.

Sarah was predeceased by her parents; Henry and Elizabeth Martens; two brothers; Isaac J. Penner, and John Martens in 1985, two sisters; Elizabeth Peters in 1993, and sister Mary Martens in 1995.

She leaves to mourn her passing one sister-in-law; Clara Martens of Winnipeg, 5 nieces, 1 nephew and their families.

Funeral service was held Wednesday December 11, 2002, 2:00pm at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, Rev. Henry P. Dueck and Rev. Dick Penner officiating.  Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.   Donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
