Robert John Acheson

 1975 - 2002

Born April 30, 1975, the first child and only son of Bill and Isabel Acheson of Somerset, MB; passed away at his residence in Winkler April 28, 2002.

He received his early education at Somerset and Swan Lake Schools and in 1993 graduated from Westmount Collegiate. In his middle years he was active in Science Fair projects and in high school he was involved in numerous sports such as volleyball, baseball, and curling. He participated in 4-H activities for many years, winning a gold watch award in 1993. He spent many summers as a camp counselor and lifeguard.

He attended Briercrest Bible College 1993-1995 and then transferred to University of Manitoba. During his first week at University on Sept. 11, 1995 he suffered severe head injuries when he was hit by a car at a crosswalk. After lengthy hospitalization, he returned home to convalesce. He moved back to Winnipeg in the fall of 1996 to July 1998, then after little over a year at home and helping neighbouring farmers, moved to Winkler for a term at Trainex.

Robert loved sports involvement, often in scorekeeping and officiating, and in 2001 played with the Winkler Parkland team in the Boundary Trails Fastball League. Robert also loved gathering with friends and was often seen visiting with friends and neighbors in the mall on his way to see a movie. He was active in youth activities in Somerset Bible Chapel while living at home, and in Winkler has been active with the Cornerstone Church and with the College and Career Group of the Winkler Mennonite Church.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Teresa of Whitehorse, YT and Sheri at home; his grandmother, Margaret Fraser, of Richmond, BC; Aunts and uncles, Doreen & Barrie Harrison, Drayton Valley, AB; Sheila Acheson, Brooklyn, NY; Gladys & Deb Wyatt, Mafeking, MB; Dwight & Yolande Acheson, Red Deer, AB; Ernest and Donna Fraser, Minto, MB; Del and Heather Fraser, Fairfax, MB; Alison Fraser, Richmond, BC; Marjorie Fraser & Wayne Sweeney, Whitehorse, YT and 19 cousins. Surviving great-Aunts and uncles include Alice Gordon, Ruby and Orton Harper, Winnipeg, MB; Isabelle Smith, Kamloops, BC; Grace Horsburgh, Burnaby, BC; Winston and Laura Harvey, New Westminster, BC,

He was predeceased by grandparents H.W. (Herb) & Emily Acheson in 1975, and Reg Fraser in 1992; uncles Bert Acheson in 1960, Dudley Acheson in 2000; cousins Darlene Harrison in 1973 and Curtis Acheson in 1987.

Funeral service was held Saturday May 4, 2002, 2:00pm at the Somerset Community Hall, Pastor Kevin Roberts officiating.  Interment followed at the Anglican Cemetery, Somerset.  Donations may be made to C.S.S.M.
