Ruben Hiebert

1916 - 2003

Ruben Hiebert was born on October 21, 1916 to Abram and Justine (nee Thiesen) Hiebert in the RM of Roland.  He went to Zion a country school and attended the M.B. Church with his parents.  At the age of fourteen years he began working to support himself and his parents.  Ruben was a faithful worker and wherever he worked people were pleased with him.  At the age of 26 Ruben chose to go to Banff, AB as a C.O. instead of the army because he would rather help people then hurt them.  He always gave a helping hand whenever somebody came to him for help.  At the age of 31 Ruben went into the shoe repair business.  From then on he was best known as “Hiebert Shoe Repair”.

Ruben stayed a shoe repair man for 29 years, until the age of 60 years when he retired.  He lived in a house on a farm because he loved nature.  The trees and birds reminded him of how beautiful God made the world.  He also enjoyed fishing and animals.  At the age of 68 Ruben and his brother Joe built the house he lived in until now.  At the age of 70 years Ruben had heart surgery and that meant he had to slow down and he was alone most of the time.

He enjoyed listening to music, Back to Bible and Calvary Temple.  Ruben also had his bible handy at his easy chair.   Knowing that he would alone and with a heart condition some of us tried to visit or checkup on him two or three times a week.  We were thankful for knowing that Raymond Remple visited him every Sunday.  Especially after Ruben had his first stroke in April of 2002.  After 22 days in the hospital he came home but life was more difficult for him.  But he still enjoyed the summers of 2002 and 2003 sitting in the shade of his trees on his yard.  He loved it when the neighbor children would come and play around him.  On September 11, 2003 he received another stroke which took away his speech and the use of his right side and this made him very sad.  October 12, he had another stroke and on October 30, 2003 the Lord called him home.

Ruben was predeceased by 6 brothers; 1 sister and 2 sisters-in-law.

Ruben leaves to mourn 3 brothers Joseph and Anne of Winnipeg; Martin and Margaret of Winnipeg; Henry and Betty of Winkler; 1 sister Mary and Albert Adams of Yorkton, SK; 4 sisters-in-law Kay, Eva, Helen and Mary Hiebert and their families.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday November 4, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler with Rev. Walter Hiebert officiating.  Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Gideons.

A special thank you to Dr. Booy and the nursing staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre for their many kind and thoughtful deeds in taking care of our brother.

Ruben will be sadly missed but we know we shall see him again in heaven.

We love you.      -The Hiebert Family
