Mary Thiessen
1919 - 2002
After a
peaceful, simple and beautiful life Mary Thiessen, 82 passed away on
February 3,
2002, at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, after a brief
struggle with
cancer.
Mary was known
for her faith in God and devotion to her family and admired
for the joy she
took in the simple pleasures of life.
Mary was born
on September 22, 1919 at Rosenbach, north of Winkler, toCornelius and
Helena Martens. Her school years were spent in Darlingford.
During her younger
years she worked as a cook at the Arlington Hotel. She
had many fond memories of those years.
On June 3, 1945 she married Cornie Thiessen. They made their home on the home farm two miles northwest of Morden. In 1955 they moved into Morden with their two sons. For several years she worked at the Eaton’s Mail Order Office. After her retirement in 1972 she became involved with the Ladies Aid Group of her church, where she quilted many a blanket for M.C.C. She was also involved as treasurer for the Morden Community Thrift Shop for many years. She enjoyed the work for the benefits it would bring to the community.
In 1996 Mary took up residence in the Elks Park Place. She really enjoyed the lifestyle and friendship of the residents and felt like she belonged to one big family.
Mary was steadfast in her Christian faith and walk with God. She took time to sit on her veranda or go for walks to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation. Her cheerful disposition and positive influence was an
inspiration to all who knew her. She loved the people in her life unconditionally. Her grandchildren were very special to her and her greatgrandchildren a real highlight in her life.
She will be missed and memories of her will be cherished by her sons, Harvey and wife Hilde of Morden and their children, Connie and Melanie of Edmonton; Stephen and wife Fiona and their son Joshua of Montreal; Ken and wife Debbie of Morden and their sons, Ian and wife Sharla and their daughter, Mya of Morden
and Kyle of Caronport. She will also be missed by two sisters, Lena Giesbrecht of Winkler, Nettie and Jake Peters, brother John and Sue Martens and sister-in-law Ann Martens, all of Morden.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cornie in 1993, son Ronald in infancy, three brothers, and one sister.
Her family would like to thank all her friends from the Elks Park Place for their friendship and kindness and also the Boundary Trails Health Centre for their loving, compassionate care.
The funeral was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the Morden Church of God, with Pastor Roger Stewart officiating. Interment followed at the Southside Cemetery, Morden.
