Helena “Lena” Wiebe

1908 – 2005

On Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Salem Home, Lena Wiebe aged 97 years of Winkler, MB formerly of Plum Coulee went to her eternal rest.

Helena Wiebe was born November 7, 1908 at Plum Coulee, MB to Jacob Wiebe and Suzanna Froese.  She was the 12th of 13 children.

She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the Grossweide Sommerfelder Church by Bishop Heinrich Friesen in 1929.  She lived all her adult years with four of her siblings, John, Suzanna, Nettie and Elisabeth.  They lived on a farm near Plum Coulee until they retired in 1948 when they moved to the village of New Reinfeld.  In 1967 they moved to Winkler next to their church so that they could attend their place of worship regularly.  The “Wiebe Geschwister” as they were known took the place of grandparents for their nieces and nephews.  Helena was the youngest of the group and we remember her as a fun-loving aunt.  They enjoyed gardening and making quilts.  For many years, they took care of an invalid named Margaret Goertzen.  They also made the “Funeral Clothes” for approximately 300 people for Wiebe Funeral Home.  Helena spent her last 8 years at Salem Home in Winkler.

Lena was predeceased by all her sisters and brothers.  Her last sister, Elisabeth died in 1990.  She is also predeceased by 2 nephews and 3 nieces.

She is survived by 4 nephews and 7 nieces.

Funeral service was held on Friday, December 23, 2005 at11:00 a.m. at the German Old Colony Mennonite church in Hochfeld with Rev. Henry Wieler officiating.  Interment followed at Reinlander Cemetery in Schanzenfeld.
