On the morning of Tuesday, November 22, 2005 Gordon Wiebe died peacefully at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, with Aloma at his side.
Left to cherish his memory is his family including Aloma, Janey (Henri), Cameron (Virginia), Karen (Gary), Judy (Ron) and Richard along with grandchildren; Aaron, Averi, Aimee, Alexandra, Gregory, Tyler and Andrew; brothers Alvin (Irene), Gilbert (Lillian) and his sister Ruth (Ben) and their families.
Gordon was born in Winkler on December 14, 1928 and was the eldest child of John and Helen Wiebe. At an early age, he identified his ambition to pursue a career as a pharmacist and his goal was realized when he graduated from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Pharmacy in 1954. A few years later, he opened Wiebe’s Drug Store in Winkler where he maintained his business for approximately 35 years.
Gordon was very proud of his chosen profession and as a businessman appreciated the opportunity to serve his customers and the community. He was a dedicated pharmacist who would often stay late at the store or return to work to fill a much needed prescription. He maintained close contact with his colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends. As an independent pharmacist, he assisted in the development of The United Pharmacists; serving as their first president. In 2004, he was honored by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association for 50 years of service as a licensed pharmacist.
Gordon believed in community service and as such was an active volunteer and life member of the Kinsman Club of Winkler, The Chamber of Commerce, The Masonic Lodge, the Lions Club, the Trinity Lutheran Church as well as serving on the Board of the Crocus Trails Retirement Village.
Gordon and Aloma shared their lives and their children and together took special pride in their grandchildren. He was a country boy at heart who loved the prairies and kept up to date on the local progress of the fields and crops. He will be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched either through his work, volunteering, on a fishing trip, flying or playing bridge.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Winkler, MB with Rev. Alex Klages officiating. Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.
