George Doell, beloved husband,
father and grandfather, passed away at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, with
his family by his side.He leaves to mourn his wife Viola (nee Heim) of sixty years, daughters Sharon Doell of Winkler, Colleen Carter of Winnipeg, son-in-law Bob Carter and grandson Chris Carter.
George also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Viola Doell, Marie Doell, Elsie Ralph, Beatrice Crozman, Doris Pokrant, brother-in-law Harold Pokrant, nieces, nephews, all their families, and many good friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gerhard and Maria (nee Teichroeb) Doell and his three brothers, Johnnie, Henry and Ikey.
George lived in Winkler his whole life, except for his time with the Royal Canadian Army, from 1942 to 1945. In his youth, George played hockey with the Morden Bombers and the Winkler Royals. He was also a former coach of the Royals. George enjoyed many sports, especially golf, and served as a director for the International Golf Tournament for a few years.
George tried his hand at many things, never afraid to attempt something new. He ended his formal working days with the Department of Highways, where from 1976 to 1983, he worked at the job he loved the best.
After his retirement, George devoted his time to his family and his new interests of gardening and carpentry. Most of all, he enjoyed camping trips with his wife and grandson.
George went out of his way to help others and was a champion of the underdog. He made sure the birds of the neighborhood were well-fed, and kept the "girls" at the library busy lending him books.
Funeral service was held on Monday June 24, 2002, 2:00pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Winkler. Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.
You fought the good fight, George, rest in peace.
"One glad morn, when this life is o're, I'll fly away home."
