Emmy Thiessen (nee Janz)

formerly Wiebe

1905 - 2002

Emmy Thiessen, who was "Emmy" to young and old alike, was born to Margaretha (nee Baerg) and Tobias Janz in Halbstadt, Russia on Feb. 13, 1905. She immigrated to Canada in 1926, and resided in Grunthal, Man.

She sought employment as a maid in Winnipeg and by 1930 she had paid her debt to the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization, who helped her with the immigration expenses.

In the early 1930's she continued her education at the Steinbach Collegiate which would qualify her to enter Nurse’s training. By 1943 she had successfully completed an 18 month Practical Nursing course to be followed by a Certificate in Registered Nursing in 1948 from the Grace Hospital Training School for nurses. She practised her nursing skills at the St. Boniface Sanatorium, Grace Hospital and the Calgary, Steinbach and Winkler hospitals.

In 1957 she ended her professional nursing career and pursued her passion for homemaking when she married George Wiebe. Emmy loved gardening and also enjoyed the numerous fishing trips with George.

The passing of George in 1973 left her a lonely widow but after a few years she felt the Lord had another mission in mind for her.

Much to her delight, Emmy became a real "mom" and "grandma" when she married Diedrich Thiessen in 1977. They made their home at Vauxhall, Alberta (Diedrich’s home) leaving Plum Coulee behind, but found their way back again to Manitoba as residents of the Maple Drive Manor in Plum Coulee.

She was widowed again in 1992 when Diedrich passed away. Her health allowed her to continue living at the Manor for a number of years. Four years ago she moved to Salem Home in Winkler, where she was given the best of care until she was called to her eternal rest on July 10th, 2002.

She leaves to mourn 2 daughters - Ellie and husband Art Siemens and Evelyn and husband John Wiens, son-in-law Henry Wall and wife Frieda, 7 grandchildren, great grand children, 2 sisters - Erna  Peters and Agnes Schmidt, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her parents Tobias and Margaretha Janz, 2 brothers - Heinrich Janz in infancy and Nick (Viola) Janz, 3 sisters - Liza (Jake Friesen), Olga (Jacob Wiens), Mary (Cornelius Wiebe), her first husband George Wiebe, her second husband Diedrich Thiessen, 2 sons - Garry and Walter and 1 daughter Edith Wall.

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself: that where I am, there ye may be also. And wither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”           St John 14:1-4.

Funeral service was held Sunday July 14, 2002, 11:30am at the Salem Home Chapel, Winkler with Rev. Art Siemens officiating.  Interment followed at the Plum Coulee Cemetery.  Donations may be made to Salem Foundation Inc.  165 15th St. Winkler, Mb. R6W 1T8.
