Anna Loewen
1913 - 2002
Mom
was born to John J. and Anna Braun on June 4, 1913 in the Burwalde School
District where she also obtained her schooling. In her youth Mom was baptized
and joined the Herald Gemeinde Church, which was located in the country north of
Morden.
Mom met our father, John Loewen. They were married on October 16, 1938 and moved to Winkler, where they joined the Bergthaler Mennonite Church. It was here that she joined the Bethel Ladies Group. Church attendance and Christianity was always very important to Mom and she had a deep concern for her family, that they would also come to know the Lord.
Our memories of Mom were of her having a soft and tender heart, always being ready to listen. She had a keen sense of humor and even in her later years would come up with the neatest sayings. She took great pleasure in her grandchildren and always welcomed their visits. It didn’t take long for them to discover where the candies and cookies were kept.
Mom enjoyed gardening and especially took pride in the many varieties of flowers she grew. She especially enjoyed irises, roses and lilies and even while her stay at Salem would brighten when someone would bring her flowers.
Along with knitting and crocheting, Mom also did a lot of sewing. As children we can remember her spending many hours at the sewing machine, sometimes working into the wee hours of the morning just so that we would have a new outfit to wear to a Christmas program or some other function. She also did custom sewing for others and was a meticulous seamstress, taking a lot of pride in her work.
Mom and Dad’s home was always warm and welcoming to family and friends. She enjoyed nothing better than being able to extend her hospitality to someone by offering them faspa, something which has carried on to the children and grandchildren.
We remember Mom as being a classy lady, always prom and proper, enjoying new shoes and styles in clothing. The enjoyment of shoes is something she has passed on to her family as well as the grandchildren.
Mom and Dad’s health began failing in the early 1990’s. It was in November 1993 where mom suffered a stroke which left her partially paralyzed, necessitating her to use a walker, but even then she was able to return home for a number of years. Dad passed away in April 1996, which was a huge loss for Mom. It became necessary for her to receive more care an din August 1997 was admitted to the Salem Personal Care Home where she remained until her passing. She fit into the routine of the nursing home quickly and soon gained many friends. She enjoyed the staff as well as the residents she came in contact with.
Mom is survived by two sons and two daughters, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandsons: son Herb and Mary Anne Loewen and their children: Kevin and Jennifer; daughter Barb and Peter Buhler and their children: Shawn and Simone, Reynold and Heloise; daughter Amanda and Darrel Klassen and their children: Angie, Ryan and Jessie, and Kami; son Tom and April Loewen and their children: Melissa and Travis.
